Discovering Belgrade, Serbia: The Temple of Saint Sava and Belgrade Fortress

I took a trip to Belgrade, the capital of Serbia and there is a lot to learn. One significant place in Belgrade that you should visit is the Belgrade fortress. This place has experienced numerous battles and conquests.  It played a role in the Serbian uprising and the war for Serbia’s independence from the Ottoman Empire. While in the fortress, you can see the Victor monument honoring the victory of Serbia over the Ottoman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As you walk along the fortress, you can see the display of military artefacts.

Ok let’s move away from wars. Do you know that the Belgrade fortress was built on a hill and is a great location to see the beautiful views of the meeting point of two major rivers – the River Sava and River Danube? It is free to visit the Belgrade Fortress, so add it to your itinerary.

Another interesting landmark to visit while in Belgrade is the temple of Saint Sava which is said to be one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. It is a symbol of Serbia's National Identity and religious heritage. The church is dedicated to Saint Sava, the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church and an important personality in medieval Serbia. The church is said to be built on the spot where Saint Sava was burned by the Ottoman rulers. The idea to build the temple started in 1895, but wars and political changes delayed its construction. Work began in 1935, then stopped during World War II, and started again in about 1984.

Inside, the temple is decorated with colorful mosaics and one outstanding mosaic work is the Christ Pantocrator. You can visit the temple to explore, pray, or attend a service.

Wrapping up my visit to Serbia, it was interesting to see how the country has evolved despite its troubled past. Let me know in the comment section if you think it is worth visiting Serbia. As I always say, it takes exploring the world by visiting one city at a time.
