Toronto: the largest city in Canada

I had it on my bucket list to visit Canada. That wish came to pass as I took a trip to Toronto, the largest city in Canada and the capital of the province of Ontario. I will be sharing with you, the top three attractions to visit in Toronto that would make you love this city.

The CN Tower: Toronto’s Sky-High Icon

No trip to Toronto is complete without visiting the city’s iconic structure, the CN Tower —a landmark that promises an unforgettable experience. It was once the tallest freestanding structure in the world until Dubai’s Burj Khalifa was built in 2009.

Ride the glass elevator up to the observation deck, and suddenly, you can see the entire city spread out below you. From up there, you can also see Lake Ontario and guess what, on clear days, you can see as far as the Niagara Falls.

Another main attraction in the CN Tower is a revolving restaurant offering fine dining with a 360-degree view of the city. It completes one full rotation every 72 minutes.

Ok, so why was the CN Tower built

Did you know this architectural wonder wasn’t built for sightseeing?

Back in the 1960s, Toronto became a thriving destination. Skyscrapers were springing up, and existing Television and radio signals struggled to reach over the new tall buildings that were constructed. There was a recurring bouncing of telecommunication signals. To solve this problem, the Canadian National Railway company built the CN Tower. That is where it gets its name: CN, short for Canadian National. Take note, to this day, it is still a vital telecommunications hub, but it’s also a proud national symbol—and a major tourist attraction destination.

Moving on to another attraction in Toronto:

Just 15 minutes away by taking a ferry from downtown at the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal are the Toronto Islands that feel like an entirely different world of adventure. This is the Centre Island, the biggest, Central and most popular island of the Toronto archipelago. From this island, you will see beautiful views of Toronto’s skyline.

But that’s not all, every year the Centre Island is the venue of the annual Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival organised by the Toronto Chinese Business Association. It is a cultural experience in an open-air setting. You can experience the Chinese culture, taste delicious street food and watch boat racing and a celebration of the Chinese heritage, all set in the great outdoors of the island.

Centre Island is a good place for outdoor activities; If you want an adventure, you can rent a bike, wander the trails, have a picnic and relax at the beach. Another Popular attraction on Centre Island is the Centreville Amusement Park, a family-friendly centre with suitable rides for kids, such as carousel.

Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada

Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada is located very close to the CN Tower in downtown Toronto. It is an immersive attraction that brings the wonders of the underwater world right to the city. It is a good place for fun and an educational experience. Ripley’s Aquarium should be on your itinerary, especially if you are already planning to visit the CN Tower, as it makes for a comfortable and complete day outing in the heart of Toronto.

Toronto presents an exciting fusion of towering cityscapes, tranquil nature retreats, and captivating cultural experiences. From standing atop the legendary CN Tower and exploring scenic Toronto Islands to visiting the mesmerising underwater worlds at Ripley’s Aquarium, this city invites travellers to discover the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation.
